The Purple Penguin
Ingrid walked into school with a smile on her face, just like she did every day. Miss Hacky told Ingrid her smile was one to light up the entire classroom. Ingrid really felt like she made an accomplishment when Miss Hacky told her that. Despite her smiling face, there was one day in the middle of 4th grade where Ingrid wasn’t smiling. This surprised her friends and especially Miss Hacky. How could such a happy girl like Ingrid ever be sad?
DIIING! The school bell echoed throughout the parking lot, and Ingrid ran into Styles Elementary School smiling as usual. Ingrid was jogging through the hallway when she suddenly fell onto the ground. She realized she ran into Sally Dempsey, the most popular girl in the 4th grade. “Oh my gosh, Sally I really do apologize. Oh dear, I hope I didn’t startle you.” Ingrid apologized to Sally and helped her pick up her books. As she picked up the last item, she noticed something purple underneath it. She lifted the notebook to reveal a soft, fluffy purple plush penguin. Before she could even hand the animal back to Sally, it was snatched roughly out of her hands. Sally gave her a nasty glare and trotted into the classroom.
Ingrid began to feel a new emotion. She did not like this emotion. Her smile faded, and Ingrid’s face began to turn a fiery red. Was it anger? Hatred? Indignant? No, she was jealous. EW, yuck. Ingrid thought to herself. Why was she jealous? Suddenly, a light bulb flickered on in her head. “I’m jealous of her soft, fluffy, purple plush penguin!” It took Ingrid a few seconds to realize she was talking to herself in the middle of the hallway. “Geez Ingrid.” Maximus Starr said. “Maybe you should go to the counselor for some serious psychological help.” Ingrid’s smile drooped into a frown, like an upside-down rainbow.
Ingrid dragged into the classroom, full of children staring at her. Oh no, they must’ve heard me talking to myself! Ingrid thought worriedly. “Ingrid, you aren’t smiling and you’re three minutes late for class!” Miss Hacky stated as Ingrid slowly took her seat. “I’m so very sorry, Miss Hacky.” Ingrid apologized meaningfully. She pulled out her book and school began.
Before Ingrid knew it, recess had arrived, and Sally brought her soft, fluffy, purple plush penguin to the playground. Ingrid had a plan, a devious plan, she was going to steal the plush! Ingrid ran up to Sally. “Sally, they’re giving out free nail polish in the library!” she exclaimed. Sally shrieked happily, but ear-piercingly, and began to run. As she began to sprint away, Ingrid ripped the plush from her hand. Sally spun around so fast Ingrid surely thought her head was spinning. “INGRID STEFANOPOLIS, GIVE ME MY SOFT, FLUFFY, PURPLE PLUSH PENGUIN!” Ingrid laughed and ran up the rope stairs, the plush in her hand. “Give it back!” Sally yelled and ran behind Ingrid. Ingrid made a sharp turn onto the bridge and checked behind her to see where Sally was.
Sally was briskly catching up to her. She had two choices. The swirly slide to exit, or the tire bridge to continue through the massive playground. She chose the tire bridge. Using her wicked track skills, she leaped over all six tires. Now, onto the ladders. She climbed over each spinning ladder to get to the next. After she was through them all, she ran onto the monkey bars. Quickly going through, she went onto the seven slides, each one like a road, leading to the next. But Ingrid was too late. Sally grabbed the plush and pushed Ingrid. Down, down, down the slides. She landed with an oomph on the mulch.
Before she knew it, Miss Hacky was by her side, scolding her. Ingrid then realized she let a soft, fluffy, purple plush penguin make her act like a freak. Maybe Maximus was right, maybe she did need help. No. She thought. I let jealously rip the smile right off of my face. Miss Hacky explained how she could’ve told Sally how she admired her plush penguin rather than steal it. Maybe one day, she’ll have one of her own. But for now, she serves a week of recess detention with Miss Hacky.
